Marry Me
Modern Day
He's going to do it.
He's finally going to do it.
Yes, after months, years, centuries, millennia of hesitating… Berwald is finally going to be asking the love of his life, Tino, to marry him.
Pacing back and forth the vast sitting room in the mansion he and Tino still share, this is really the first time Berwald was ever openly agitated and nervous. There wasn't anyone else in the room with him right now (except for Hanatamago, but she doesn't really count as a someone), and thank god for that too. Anyone who could see him right now wouldn't help but worry, since he's never been like this before. He's never paced back and forth for anything. He's always, always been able to keep a stoic, unfeeling face, even when in dire situations. Well, of course, except for… that one time.
Remembering the time he lost Tino to that… Russian is also one of the reasons why he's never gathered the courage to ask him before. He's always been afraid that someone, from somewhere, was going to whisk him away once more. And that's the one thing he's always feared the most. He's always watched his back, been overprotective, even paranoid at times. He didn't want Tino to be taken from him again. He's also always feared the fact that he might not be strong enough, still, to protect Tino from whatever harm that may befall them.
But all of that has changed now.
With these modern times where countries cannot just do as they please like they did a hundred or so years ago, Berwald is now more certain that he has enough strength to protect Tino should harm come knocking at their door. He was sure that he could seriously protect him from being taken away this time, because he has the military and financial capabilities to do so. No one, no one, whoever it may be, was going to covet him for themselves again, physically, mentally, or emotionally.
Yes, he had labeled and called Tino his 'wife' ever since they had been together. But now is the time to make that label official, and he was going to make sure of that.
…But what if he refuses?
Such thoughts entered Berwald's mind as he stopped pacing for a moment, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a worn out little box that looked like it was made before World War I. And it is, since he's kept that ring on him for hundreds of years now, just in case he's finally found the right time and place to formally propose. Opening the little box carefully, he peered inside to see if the ring is still in acceptable condition. And it is, albeit being a little old-fashioned. It was a vintage silver ring with a little round amethyst stone, which matched the color of Tino's eyes. It was a ring that he'd been wanting to give him for years, centuries, but couldn't due to undesirable circumstances and unsure feelings about his own strength.
Though, as he looked at the ring, he chewed on his lower lip in thought. What if Tino refuses to marry him? He wanted to prepare himself physically and emotionally. After all, Murphy's Law states that whatever that can go wrong will go wrong. And this is one of those major things that can go wrong.
Berwald still wasn't so sure about himself. During the times they were together, he's never once showed or said his feelings for the other aside from the fact that he's called him his wife. But what if Tino thought (and still thinks) that that was a joke? Would he think that this proposal is a joke as well? Sure, right before they got separated, Tino told (or rather, mouthed to) him that he loves him. Does that still hold true? He didn't get the chance to reply since he collapsed before he could. But wouldn't he think that he loves him too, despite his aloof, intimidating exterior?
He really wasn't sure. But he knew there was only one way to find out, and that's by asking him.
Blatantly, outrightly, asking him.
And that's about where his contemplation stopped, and the feelings of nervousness and unsureness about himself once again returned.
Flopping onto one of the armchairs for a while, Berwald closed the little box and clutched it tightly in his fist, sighing deeply and loudly. He leaned back into the chair and draped his arm over his eyes, before heaving another sigh. He really didn't know how to even ask this question. On top of that, he really didn't know if Tino would accept him or not. His heart was beating madly, pounding with such force that he was so sure it was going to tear out of his chest anytime soon. He's never felt this way before. He's never been in a situation where he's so overwhelmed with his feelings that his face would actually show it.
But, once again, he'll never know until he asks.
Conflict, conflict. What to do?
Standing up from the chair, he paced around the room once more.
To ask, or not to ask. That is, indeed, the question right now to which Berwald does not have a definite answer.
