"Heróis do mar, nobre povo,
Nação valente, imortal,
Levantai hoje de novo
O esplendor de Portugal!
Entre as brumas da memória,
Ó Pátria, sente-se a voz
Dos teus egrégios avós,
Que há-de guiar-te à vitória!"
Name: Catarina Castelo Moura
Origin: Lisboa, Portugal
Gender: Female
Orientation: Heterosexual
Religion: Roman Catholic
Birthday: June 10, 1143
Age: 23
Languages spoken: Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, English
Personality: Undoubtedly, the first thing one will notice about Catarina is her loud mouth and/or her conceit. Afraid of change, she clings onto the pride she had once, trying to overcome what has happened to her. Her competitive nature often works against her, and she sulks a lot when she loses. During rare times of peace, she is actually polite and kindhearted, though still blunt that she does not even think over what she says. She is always sincere, though ironically is indirect when giving her opinion on something. And if it's about her love life, she'll probably refuse to listen to reason and deny everything.
As a frugal person, she discourages giving things away without expecting something in return. "Thank You" rarely satisfies her unless the person is very dear. Not that she would ever admit it, but she is extremely attached to certain individuals. She would become overprotective, and sometimes jealous of those who are closer to them. She also hoards any objects that belong to her, especially money, and will keep any valuables hidden from even her closest friends. She also has a habit of being an accomplished compulsive liar, at times, and sometimes she will tell a tiny lie, then continue to tell it and let it grow until she believes in it, herself. She's rather convincing from the start, but once she's hooked herself, there's no turning back.

Appearance: Catarina stands at 5’4” and her body-type is more small and curvy, as she bears the infamous Iberian Asset(s), as well as wide-ish hips and an average-sized bust. She has rather thick dark hair which has, over time, started to curl slightly, but she never really bothers trying to do anything with it and just lets it fall wherever unless she's putting it up. She has deep blueish-green eyes that actually tend to vary between blue and green. She also bears a beauty mark beneath her right eye. Being Antonio's twin sister, they share many similarities such as the color of their skin and hair, similar facial features, and an identical 'buhyoo!' smile. She, however, often bears an expression of content, or honest and simple happiness instead.
From her days as an empire, Catarina bears many scars scattered about her body, in various states of healing. Two, however, stand out a lot amongst the rest. Over her heart is a large, raised, rather nasty-looking scar she received during the Lisbon Earthquake. She tries to keep it covered, and when it's noticed, she prefers not to talk about it. The other is down her left eye, leaving her partially blind in that eye. She earned it during Reconquista and she really refuses to discuss it, so don't ask. On her right side she has a compass tattooed on her right side, that was placed there in remembrance of her days as a navigator and was only just filled in at the turn of the century when colors in tattoos was available. She also has a cross branded on the back of her neck when she was in the Inquisition and obsessed with religion. The phrase "Exurge Domine et Judicia Causam Tuam" circles it. Nowadays she's rather embarrassed about it and tries to hide it, as it's also very sensitive when touched.
Since the fall of her empire, Catarina has favored more humble clothing. She’s now most likely to be seen in very simple and desaturated clothing, favoring light fabrics and a pair of shorts to any skirt or dress. Formalwear, however, is a real treat and she thoroughly enjoys dressing up. She is still very extroversive in displaying her religion to those around her, and continues to carry the same cross given to her when she was a child.
Relationships:
England:
Arthur and Catarina go back to the 12th century, where they met as children, but their friendship was not made official and public until the 1386 Treaty of Windsor (Or possibly in 1373 with the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty). Catarina has always considered Arthur her closest friend and companion, and has loved him almost unconditionally since they met. She has made her feelings rather clear and public and assumes he knows, but is just not making any moves. Their friendship was disrupted multiple times, through the Iberian Union from 1580 to 1640(Where she was tied to her brother's animosity towards Arthur and was not allowed to see him) and the British Ultimatum in 1890 (When he breached their friendship to take control of her African colonies). Even so, and despite her family's teasing and the rest of the world's inability to understand it, she chooses to stay by Arthur no matter what.
Spain:
Antonio is Catarina's twin and only living relative, and while she loves him dearly, they have a tendency to get on each other's nerves. The siblings were unconditionally close when they were younger, being the only thing the other had between the disappearances of Mama Iberia, Rome, and Carthage and the appearance of Al-Andalus and Moorish Iberia. Throughout Reconquista, the siblings were barely ever allowed to meet other people or leave their quarters and were in the servitude of Al-Andalus, so they became even closer. However, when she managed to escape Al-Andalus and left her brother behind to be her own kingdom, their relationship sank. Up until the Iberian Union in 1580, they became bitter rivals in overseas expansion. In 1580, Antonio forced Catarina into a union, stating that they could rule the world in their combined state. Catarina, however, remained bitter and stubborn throughout the Union until ending it in 1640. While she will deny it fervently, she was not entirely against the idea of an united Iberia, only against the bloody ways she had been brought into it. From then until the 20th century, they remained rivals, Antonio even inviting Francis to invade his sister during the Napoleonic wars. By the 1930s, the two were in practically the same predicament: fascist Authoritarian governments. However, despite the same ideas they shared at this time, they did not share the warmest relationship. After the fall of their fascist governments, the two repaired their relationship, giving independence to their colonies, liberalizing their economies, and joined the EU together in 1986. Today, their relationship is very good, despite a huge sibling rivalry, and they even had a bid to jointly host the World Cup in 2018.
Scotland:
Alex, oh Alex, Alex, Alex. Catarina has known the guy since they were young, having been close friends with Arthur and his family since they met. While she's never truly admitted it and has had a hard time seeing it past her blind devotion for his younger brother, Catarina started developing a crush on him in the middle ages, and it has only grown. The two had shared a rather casual relationship of flirting and teasing for quite a while now, but Catarina never thought it would go anywhere. She knew him to be a ladies' man, deceitful, and manipulative, which he was, but when she asked him what his feelings were and he answered truthfully, she came to the realization that she had felt the same about him for a good long while. While she has not been able to trust him as far as she could throw him for a long time, she is currently willing to risk a lot and give him this chance. She knows that she will forever devoted to Arthur, but refuses to ever let Alex know that, and is attempting to get over Arthur and give Alex the same devotion. All in all, she's really hoping this works out.
History:
The Kingdom of Portugal emerged in the 12th century connected with the process concerning the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. At the same time that all the territories occupied by the Moors were conquered southwards Portugal, originally a county and a part of one of the most ancient Christian kingdoms of the Peninsula - Leão - demanded its independence in 1143. Due to endless fights and negotiations D. Afonso I, first king of Portugal, was awarded by the pope (1179) with the papal bull manifestis probatum thus bringing stability. At the eyes of all the Christian world, that meant the birth of a new kingdom in a part of the world were the fight against the infidels would be reinforced by a backup force of attack (The Palestine and the Peninsula). Portugal was an expert concerning the technological development of cartography and navigation and that enabled us in the 15th century of discoveries. The inventions and the technical improvements have the most various roots, though Portugal''''s geographical position and its cultural cohesion were a step ahead to find new things.n the beginning of the 15th century, due to the crisis felt through all Europe during the 14th century, Portugal was dealing with serious economical problems. It was urgent to find new resources, spereead the Christian belief to new people and fulfil the desire to find/know new lands. The Portuguese people in little less than a century found new lands in a big part of the world. In the 16th century Portugal had dominion over areas from the Atlantic until the Far East, making it altogether a vast empire. The new worlds that Portugal found melted together. A new sensibility, a new taste and a new knowledge were brought in to a light with the discovery voyages made in 16th century. Lisbon in 16th century was the capital of an empire, it became the trade centre. Its geographical position was fundamental. The city became the meeting point of all europeans, who soon would settle in Lisbon, from Africa slaves were brought (in the 16th century, in Lisbon, 10 out of 100 were slaves) people from all over the world arrived to Lisbon seeking a better way of life. Portugal was then ruled by a Spanish king. Though at beginning Portugal had same benefits with this fusion, by the 17th century the situation was different it was that this integration in the big empire of Carlos V''''s successors brought a higher tax pressure along with all the empire troubles: participation in wars which Portugal had nothing to do with (the Spanish Armada). After achieving the independence it was of major importance to get back the lost empire, Portugal did not rule anymore in the found lands, the Cape Route was now in the hands of the British, the Dutch and the French. Brazil looked like a good solution to the weakened Portuguese economy, they had the sugar production during the 17th century and lots of gold in the 18th century.Like the Berlin Conference (1884-85) has confirmed, other European major countries were looking for new markets and raw materials, but Portugal was far back in this race, though without enlarging its possessions, Portugal still maintained, with some effort, the colonies. D.Manuel II (the second son of D.Carlos) was recognised king of Portugal by the end of that same year. He was the last king of Portugal. The first temporary cabinet declared: The five shields of the Portuguese arms are representative of the five Islamic kings that D.Afonso Henriques defeated at the Ourique battle. The situation of political instability leads to a military coup in 1926, a military dictatorship was declared. The press began being censured and all liberties were diminished. This regime is strengthened by the nomination of Salazar to the government and with the proclamation of a new constitution in 1933, that set a new authoritarian regime - Estado Novo.
