Mathias Køhler -Kongeriget Danmark-
" Noooooorge~!"
Name: Mathias Køhler Origin: The Kingdom of Denmark Gender: Male Orientation: Norgesexual. B| Religion: Lutheran (Den Danske Folkekirke- Danish National Church) Birthday: January 1 (When he joined the EU) Age: 20 Languages spoken: Danish, English, Norwegian, Conversational Swedish
Personality: Though he is not a very likable person at first glance because of his loud, bossy, and demanding demeanor, Denmark is actually someone who is rather enjoyable to be with. He is childish in nature, and though he appears to be twenty years old and is older than most countries, he still sees the world through the innocent eyes of a child. He is very helpful towards others and can't stand to see anyone suffering, to the point that he tends to get involved in other countries' situations. However, when he does get involved, he almost always never picks sides and helps those who need his help (though when it comes to Norway or Iceland, he is always quite ready to pick their side and help them).
Due to his helpful nature and being kind to all people, he tends to get taken advantage of. Being the least corrupt country in the world, he is also very trustworthy when it comes to financial matters and everything else, though he doesn't appear like it. He is also very unaware, tending to not be able to read the atmosphere most of the time. Because of this, he usually doesn't get subtle teasing, courtesy of Norway. Also, he tends to cling to people he likes, or at least give them a loud and hard slap on the back as a greeting (from which one may fall over if they do not have a strong sense of balance or cannot withstand a big amount of force).
Because of his bossy and demanding nature, one could also say that he acts like a spoiled brat sometimes. He always wants things done his way and will most of the time refuse to listen to others, which is the reason why Sweden and Finland left him in the first place. He is also very stubborn, due to this fact. Once he is convicted in something, it is very hard to get him to bend towards another idea and consider it.
His one other passion other than Norway would probably be the environment. He is very active and keen on protecting the environment, constantly reminding his people and other countries to be ecologically beneficial and enacting laws and holding meetings with other countries to discuss environmental issues. Thus, he also loves nature, as he grew up surrounded with lush green plains and thick forests where he used to forage in his Viking days, and he plans to keep it that way.
And though Denmark does appear like a loudmouthed brat... on very rare days, his serious side will show up and take over. This is usually achieved on days where something melancholic in his history has happened and he wants to commemorate it, or just times when he is alone and he feels like contemplating on things. Overall, though, he is usually very much approachable and friendly, and thus one can definitely find themselves a good friend in this Dane.
Appearance: Height: 183 cm (Approximately 6 feet, reference here) Hair: Spiky and blond, with a little black hat placed at the right side Eye color: Blue Clothes: A long black coat, red shirt and black tie underneath, complete with red pants, knee-high black boots and black gloves Also carries his trademark larger-than-normal axe.
Relationships:- America: His best friend who he is very fond of, he's Denmark's first go-to person every time he has a problem or just downright wants someone to hang out with. He is also his drinking buddy, as the two are almost always frequently seen at bars drinking together. Their friendship is very deep, spanning across continents. America could be considered one of, if not the, closest friend of Denmark.
- Greenland: The apple of his eye and his beloved daughter. Though he had given her a taste of freedom, he is still very much fond of her, and can thus become overprotective sometimes. He adores her to the point of spoiling her and giving her everything and anything she wants, needs, and could ever ask for.
- England: Due to the many wars they have fought ever since he has known the Brit, coupled with being bitter about the Napoleonic Wars, he isn't very fond of him. At all. Though he doesn't mind him as much as he minds Sweden, he still can't stand the man. But at least, he can work with him if it is needed. But... only IF it is ABSOLUTELY needed.
- Sweden: He hates this man. Everything about him. Under no situation can they EVER cooperate. Ever. Enough said.
- Austria: In history, he is grateful for Austria's assistance with his fight with Sweden. However, he did fight against him as well in the second Schleswig War, when somehow his boss (as replacement for the previous king that just died) was not suited to the taste of then Prussia and Austria's bosses. Tired of being ordered around, he went to war against them.... and lost. Though he is still bitter about that event, nowadays, he doesn't mind the Austrian very much.
- Vatican City: While he hated the kid for severing their ties when he converted to Lutheran, he has since tolerated him after their relationship has been restored. That, and he cannot resist cute kids.
- France: While they have fought wars against each other in the past, he mostly does not mind this guy. Though, he does like visiting his territory and seeing the sights. And they work together on some occasions, so he finds that he doesn't mind the Frenchman very much.
- Germany: His most important trading partner. For that reason, he values his relationship with this man, both personal and business. He tries not to get on his bad side most of the time, and he mostly has a good relationship with him. But only if he behaves.
- Lithuania: Ever since Lithuania gained back his independence, Denmark has stuck by him and helped him with whatever he needed help on, until now. Due to their good friendship, they also find themselves cooperating in everything else they do, be it political, military, or social matters. In other words, he's got his back, and Lithuania's got his.
- Israel: Due to him helping Danish Jews (and Jews in general) escape during WWII, Israel is grateful to him, to the point of declaring him a righteous country. He is happy with the label, and likes the country, though he is opposed to how he treats Gaza.
- South Korea: Offering him assistance during the Korean War though not siding with him, Denmark knows the kid thinks he's in some way indebted to him. But really, he just wanted to help at that time, and while he really did send out a lot of aid and medical help to South Korea at that time, really, he didn't expect anything from it. He just hoped that the kid would actually see that, and so he tries to be friends with him.
- Finland: While these two don't hold a very deep relationship, Denmark is still fond of the Fin. He treats him as a very good friend, and is readily there should Fin encounter trouble. He is also willing to stay in the same room as Sweden only if Fin is there, and so he frequently visits his house just so he can see him (and play with Hana-Tamago).
History: (Main historical events or prominent people will be highlighted and elaborated on)
- Ca. 12,500 BC: first residents
- 8-11th century: Viking Age
- 965: Christianized
- 1035: Canute the Great dies, England rebels against Denmark (Prior to this, England and Denmark were united), Norwegian Vikings take the chance to invade Denmark, though their invasions weren't very organized.
- Mid-12th century: Violent civil wars.
- 1168: Valdemar the Great conquers the Principality of Rügen, and thus becomes powerful. Denmark also gains influence and power in the Baltic Sea.
- 12th century: Economic expansion and close ties with the Catholic Church
- 1202: Valdemar II came into power. During this time, Denmark loses its foothold in the conquered lands, and the nobility gained power while the peasants lost their rights.
- Late 13th century: Royalty loses their hold, first constitution formed
- 1319-1332: Reign of Christopher I. Highly unpopular and inefficient, many peasant uprisings, etc. Few years after, Denmark was plunged into chaotic times, without a king to lead them.
- 1340: Valdemar son of Christopher (the Danes seem to be fond of this name) appointed to the throne, unites partitioned territories (ruled by counts) until 1360.
Margaret I (1353-1412) Margaret I was the queen of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, through being married to Håkon VI of Norway, who was also tied to the Swedish nobility. She was a wise and competent leader, and through her, the Kalmar Union, or the union between the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, is formed (which had also become official in 1397).
She was first crowned queen of Denmark and had planned on making her son Olav rule the Kingdoms after her father's death. However, Olav was still extremely young, so she acted as regent and was a wise leader who made decisions that benefitted the countries. After Olav's untimely death at the age of 17, she was then named regent of Denmark and Norway. She then was able to further prove her competence by invading and subduing Sweden, and in 1389 she is now "the omnipotent mistress of three kingdoms" ("Margaret I of Denmark"--Wikipedia). She then transferred her power and declared her son Eric of Pomerania as king of all three kingdoms, though she was the one who ruled while she was still alive and Eric only assumed real power after her death.
- 1396: Eric of Pomerania then takes the seat and promptly destroys everything that his mother had just built up, thereby making the Kalmar Union merely an official agreement in name and not actually doing anything. In addition, this caused the Swedish to revolt many times and thus plunged Denmark and Sweden into an era of wars.
- 1513-1523: Christian II reign further destroyed any hope of peace between Sweden and Denmark as he infused Machiavellian principles in his way of ruling, through invading Sweden and murdering 100 leaders of the Swedish anti-unionist forces, which came to be known as The Swedish Bloodbath of 1520.
- 1483-1546: Protestant Reformation. Denmark consequently became Lutheran. Out of this came discrimination towards Calvinists, Catholics, and followers of Ulrich Zwingli.
- 16th Century: Denmark-Norway became a superpower proficient in trading and commerce.
- 17th Century: Denmark-Norway spent a great deal of time in war with Sweden, of which Sweden won the majority.
- Late 17th-18th century: Frederick III established absolutism, or the absolute control of the monarchy pertaining to all affairs of the country. This continued to be the method of ruling throughout the centuries. There was also an opportunity for the renaissance to rise and take over, and the economy improved. Furthermore, following the outbreak of the French Revolution, serfdom was abolished.
- 17th-20th century: Age of exploration and colonialism. The most noted one is Tranquebar in India, which they kept for 200 years. All the other smaller colonies in Africa were used for slave trading, and the others in the Carribean were purchased from France and other countries.
- 1794: Armed Neutrality Treaty. As the name says: neutral.
- 1801: England attacks Denmark's navy in the Battle of Copenhagen, leaving it destroyed. Paved the way for the involvement of the Danes in the war, on France's side, in 1807.
The Gunboat War (1807-1814) The Gunboat War occurred in 1807, when the British attacked the Danish fleet for the second time. The first time they had attacked was in 1801, and this prompted the Danes to finally join the war. Denmark-Norway began building a multitude of boats to match the English navy. However, as the English navy proved to be far more superior, it defeated Denmark-Norway after 7 years of war.
This war ultimately costed a great deal for Denmark-Norway. At the Congress of Vienna at 1814, they were forced to cede some of their land to the winning side. The most significant loss is the separation of Denmark-Norway, with Norway being given over to Sweden in the end.
- 1873: Scandinavian Monetary Union formed between Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. This was ended at the outbreak of WWI.
- WWI: Neutral.
WWII (1939-1945) Denmark declared neutrality at first, but was invaded and taken over by Germany on April 9, 1940. Due to this, England took over the Faroese Islands and Iceland, which also caused Iceland to declare its independence.
Under Germany, Denmark at first was allowed to maintain his own government. However, when it disbanded in 1943 due to dissatisfaction with Nazi demands, Germany took over. While the resistances made governing the Danes difficult, they were not liberated until the very end of the war, in May 1945. During this time, as well, Denmark was able to send off most of its Jews to neutral Sweden, thus protecting them.
- 1945: Became a UN member
- 1948: Home rule for the Faroese Islands.
- 1949: Became member of NATO, one of its original members
- 1953: More political reforms-- abolition of the Landsting (elected upper house), abolition of Greenland as colonial status, and also allowing females to succeed the throne.
- 1973: Joined the European Community (then European Union)
- Modern day: Very much active in environmental protection and peacekeeping in different countries that are ravaged by war.
