Tino Väinämöinen Suomen tasavalta
" Even a small star shines in the darkness- Finnish Proverb"
Name: Tino Väinämöinen Origin: Republic of Finland Gender: Male Orientation: Bisexual Religion: Pagen Birthday: December 6 Age: 20 Languages Spoken: Finnish, Swedish, English, and conversational Danish/Norwegian
Personality:
Finland is a very cheerful and happy-go-lucky kind of person, which is strange for someone who's endured so many hardships. IT takes a lot to get him down, since he can almost always find a silver lining to any situation. That in no way means he is a push-over and should never be thought as one.
When his friends, or people he really cares about are in danger, he will take it upon himself to come to their aid. If this happens, the opposing threat should be aware that Finland does -not- play games and he will not hesitate to take you out should that need arise.
He also enjoys his liquor. One would think by looking at him, he'd be a light-weight, but all one needs to do is challenge him to a drinking contest. It won't take very long for this person to be falling on the floor unconscious and needing a doctor, while the Fin has his legs propped on the table, asking for another round. The moral of this story is save your liver and never attempt this.
Likes:
- Moomins - Hana Tamago - Sweden - Alcohol - Salmiakkii - Saunas
Dislikes:
- Russia - Loosing - Trespassers - Conflict
Appearance: He has pale skin, violet eyes, and a very nice golden colour to his short hair. He stands at around 5'8. Not a very intimidating height, but he doesn't really have a need to be. He's usually seen in his uniform, which is a powdery blue adorned with a cross at the neck and knee-high black boots. As well, he's almost never seen without his signature white barret.
When it's cooler outside, he will wear a red shaw with white trim to keep his shoulders warm, and at Christmas will wear a full on suit of red and white. He is Santa Clause after all, and what good Santa doesn't wear red?
Relationships:
-Sweden: He used to be rather afraid, terrified actually, of this nation. He had a change of heart however after living with him for so long. Now he is rather fond of the nation. So much so that he really enjoys their time together and talks openly with him about anything and everything.
-Russia: Does. Not. Like. He will, however tolerate his presence and treat him like a human being during a meeting or any other political exchange. He will be a civil and nice young man like everyone knows him to be, but he will not enjoy it at all.
-Denmark: They may have had bad blood in the past, but Finland has since forgiven him. He doesn't mind hanging out with him every now and again, but too much of him could be a bad thing. He's really loud you know.
-Estonia: An old friend of Finland's. They keep in touch through phone calls and e-mails. Since both are rather busy, it's hard to meet in person.
-Sealand: A rather cute child in his eyes. He almost sees him as his own, thanks to how much time he spends with Sweden.
History:
Every country needs a name before they can become official. Be that as it may, there were settlers in Finland dating back to the Ice Age ( as far back as 8300BC ). They made their home in the southern half of Finland, relying on hunting/gathering and fishing to sustain themselves and their way of life. Around 5300 BCE, FInand entered it's Neolithic era, and immigrants began to appear. They mostly came from Scandinavia and the Baltic regions. This also brought about new culture to Finland, mostly in the South where, through immigration or even just him growing on his own, the Battle Axe culture took hold. The Battle Axe culture was a more agricultural and animal husbandry type of life style and though it thrived down below, the more inland one went, the more hunting and gathering were prevalent. Not too long after, the Bronze Age began to take hold and Finland began to grow and flourish with influences from Russia and the Nordics. The Iron Age brought about Finland's language, or so speculation believes. No records exist to state otherwise or for it.
Finland was a spot for Swedish invasion before they even decided to claim them as their own. Vikings often pillaged and plundered the settlements of the country. The vikings were not the only ones that had an interest in the developing nation however. The tribes of Russia, Sweden and even Denmark all had squabbles or fights with him in order to have control of him. None really ever worked, at least not at this time. It wouldn't be till the 12th century that Sweden would finally have control of the nation. Soon, Swedish became a prominent language in the nobility and the ruling powers while Finnish became the uneducated language of the peasants and clergymen.
During Sweden's control, the nation slowly began to drift from Christianity and towards Lutheranism, during which time, the first written works in Finnish were produced as well as the nation's first university. Towards the end of the century, Finland suffered a great famine, loosing a good third of it's population. The hardships only grew worse in the 1700's when Sweden and Russia went to war with each other twice. Both times Finland was occupied by Russia in what is known to the Finnish as 'The Greater Wrath' and 'The Lesser Wrath'.
Russia would not have Finland however until 1809 thanks to the armies of Alexander I. At the time, Finnish was finally gaining the recognition of an official language, finally reaching the status of the Swedish language. This, however was only a highlight in the occupation. From 1866-1868, Finland suffered yet another famine. This time, however, 15% of the population was lost, making it one of the worst famine's in Europe's history. Even this had a silver lining though. Because of this, Russia loosened it's financial regulations, and Finland began to flourish once again. In 1909, Russia's tzar granted the country universal suffrage, though it was pointless as Russia refused to accept any laws the Finns set forth to them. Their will to be independent began to grow.
From January 27 through May 15 of 1918, FInland suffered a civil war between two parties, the Social Democrats and the Peoples Deputation of Finland, though they were more commonly called the 'Reds' (pro-Russians) and 'Whites' ( Independence). This war was brought on after the fall of Russia's great empire thanks to the revolutions of it's people. Though the war did not last long, the casualties were immense. A total of around 37,000 people lost their lives, most never even seeing the battlefield. Most of the dead, around 3/4 of them, were Reds or sympathizers of them. Despite this, the many political groups of both left and right worked together to unify the nation.
During WWII, Russia again invaded the nation, but this time, they fought back. During the Winter War, Finland was hopelessly outnumbered by the Russian forces and it looked like the country would once again have control over him. The Finns pulled through, crushing the Russians not only once, but twice.
With all of these hardships and constant occupations, Finland has a rich culture today. It has helped them define who they are as a people and has also stregthened their love for thier country.
A/N: I feel like I just wrote a paper OTL; Sorry for the length!
Hobbies:
- Coming up with festivals (strange ones) - Sharp-shooting practice - Cooking - Air guitar
Random Quirks:
- While a pretty good cook, all his food seems to look like something England has made, therefore, not many people want to eat it.
- He can compete with the 'big boys' in his liquor consumption and drink most people under the table.
- It's rare, but there are some nights (mostly in winter) where he'll stay up all night with a gun in his hand, paranoid that someone is coming for him.
- He sings in the shower and likes to pretend he's some sort of rock god for a few minutes.
